Born illegitimately to an American mother and a Chinese father, Amalie Berenger has been raised from infancy by Parisians. — During WWII, she is tricked into giving herself to a Nazi officer in order to protect her adoptive father, not knowing he is already dead. She goes to Shanghai to kill the man who misused her, where she finds her real mother and father. There she also meets and falls in love with a Jesuit priest. Her new-found sense of security is shattered when the impending Communist revolution opits her mother against her father, and threatens the lives of everyone she has come to love...
