The Husband

My wife and I have a happy marriage.
She's a good mother.
She would never abandon our family.
I don't know her at all.

I work nights so it's almost 3 a.m. when I get home. It's day ten of the heatwave and even this late, the air is suffocating.

Inside the house, the only sound is our five-month-old daughter, crying in her crib.

I wait for Em's footsteps on the landing. I listen out for her soothing voice.

There's nothing. I check our bedroom. I wait for the mound of crumpled blankets to move. The bed is empty.
