As head of a house-sitting service in Santa Fe, Leigh Sinclair believes in tight security for the premises she guards. Hurt in the past by those she loved, she believes in tight security for her heart too. But when handsome petro-geologist Carlos Wainwright returns to his estate unexpectedly one night, he sets off more than the burglar alarm she installed in his absence; he activates the warning system around her heart.

In spite of herself, Leigh is drawn to Carlos, and as they work together investigating the recent thefts of his survey reports, she finds herself falling deeply in love. Though in his arms she can forget her fears, when he's away they return to haunt her.
