Lucy Clifford had been quite unhappy living in the London home of her Aunt Fanny after her father died. So she gratefully accepted the invitation of her dear friend Melissa to live at Cumberley, the country home of the Penrose family.

Lucy had always felt something for Charles Penrose. And although his experiences in the war had changed him forever, she still held a place in her heart for him. Of his brother, Julian, she was less fond. Not only was he cold and abrupt, but he had been involved in a terrible scandal.
