Dublin's Grand Canal used to be a place for young lovers to take a romantic stroll. Now it's a prime spot for drug deals and prostitution. The water that once harbored elegant white swans now washes up syringes and dead bodies. All Mary Mullen wanted was a better life, but after hooking up with the notorious Egan brothers things began to spiral out of control; her battered body was found jammed against the canal's locks. In his efforts to solve her murder, Inspector Matt Minogue is plunged into the Dublin underworld of drug trafficking, pornography, and prostitution. Every path Minogue follows seems to lead back to the Egans, who head up an insidious organized crime network already under surveillance by a joint task force.Meanwhile, the Guards keep receiving frantic phone calls from a friend of Mary's who knows something but is on the run. And while Minogue finds his attention divided between the investigation and his daughter's upcoming wedding, his new partner, Tommy Malone, is distracted by the release from prison of his twin brother, who has a serious drug problem and is in danger of being drawn into the Egans' deadly web.
