Insectoid dronons have slain the queen Samarritte, throwing into chaos the ten thousands worlds over which Semarritte reigned. Desperate to save mankind, Lord Veriasse, Semarritte's near-immortal consort, has created a new queen: Everynne, cloned from her dead mother.
