The Fateful Pendant is a historical novel, fiction that takes placeat the end of the 18th century in France. When the mother of the family passed away after a long, serious illness, the widowed husband, Osmond, the father of two sons, decides to relocate closer to his sister. The older son Wallace starts working for a shipbuilder, Mr. Trottier, alongside with his father. The younger son, Raul is helping his aunt, Resly selling the produce from her farm. One day after a lot of rain, when numerous puddles are scattered on the ground with the water that the drenched soil wasn't able to soak up yet, Trottier's daughter, Nathalie is intentionally splattered with this dirty water as she walks through the marketplace together with her older sister Annie. One of the ragged rascals jumps into a puddle right next to her because he hates this dolled-up girl who has everything she's ever wanted, although he doesn't know her very well. Raul, whose mother always asked him to treat people nicely while she was still alive, immediately hurries over to assist the girl and cleans off her muddied face, clothes, as well as shoes then he carries the basket with her purchases all the way to the manor where she lives. As time goes by, Nathalie becomes friends with the poor Raul and this friendship lasts long years; however, this is a thorn in the side of Gerard who doesn't like seeing his sister in the company of this poor boy. Raul has started working at the shipyard of Mr. Trottier as well - thanks to Nathalie who had put in a good word for him with her father - the malicious Gerard starts to weave a net of intrigues and achieves his ends.... Following Raul's disappearance, Nathalie refuses to eat and her illness starts to return. Due to the softening of her bones, she has to revert back using a wheelchair because she is very weak and cannot walk by herself. Raul who listened to his brother's advice to run away in order to avoid going to jail after Gerard, Nathalie's brother falsely accuses him of a crime, becomes a refugee in his own country. That fateful night, when Raul hides in a morgue at a cemetery and is convinced that no one would look for him there, around midnight, however, he encounters a drunk gravedigger who screams in his face that Raul is the devil who was sent back to steal the treasure – jewelry stolen from the deceased that the gravedigger has hidden there in the morgue.Raul truly does take the jewels that he finds there and puts one of them around his neck, a chain, with a pendant in the shape of a miniature dagger with a handle inlaid with rubies. Raul didn't have a slight idea of how this is going to change his life….
