The Enormous Egg

About the middle of June, a peculiar thing happened in Freedom, New Hampshire. For a week Nate had noticed that one of the hens looked pretty strange. She had swelled out quite a bit, and was lopsided, and her feathers stuck out all over. Then she got so big she could hardly waddle and just sat in her nest looking surprised. One morning Nate looked in the henhouse to check on the hen and he saw the biggest egg he'd ever seen! The hen was teetering on the edge of the box with her head tilted to one side, looking at the egg.

No one—Nate's parents, the townspeople, the scientific world, the senators from Washington—was prepared for what had hatched out of that Enormous Egg!
