Joanna did not believe that Uncle Tom's past in Australia could affect her own future in New Zealand. Her endeavors to reassure him of this fact took her with a painting group to the Kaponga district in Taranaki, and to Dawson Falls in the Egmont National Park. But the elusive Uncle Tom was always just slipping out of sight. Running away -- from what?

Was the message written across her canvas telling her to go home meant for her, or for Miss Quinn whose father had been murdered in Australia? Joanna's determination to reach Uncle Tom brought her into contact with Ross Gordon, who did not appear to be quite free. Perhaps, after all, Uncle Tom's past did affect Joanna's future.
