About This Book

Free at Jo Beverley Website -A Christmas present for my readers...

Gambit: in chess, an opening move in which something is sacrificed in order to achieve a better position.

Miss Frances Guysley outsmarts her sister and Viscount Will Greystoke.

I hope you enjoyed this little Christmas story. I truly meant this to be a simple gift, but it has turned out to have a connection to my next novel, The Rogue's Return. You see, I had a logistical problem of the days on the road for them to get to Gretna, but then I realized -- duh! -- that they didn't have to set out in the south.

When I looked at places within a day's drive of the border, however, I landed in the area where the heroine of The Rogue's Return grew up. Then I realized that Frances would need to make some purchases at a haberdashery in Carlisle, and said heroine spent some years in such a shop. It didn't seem reasonable not to have Frances go to Mrs. Otterburn's. It's just a little touch, however, rather than a teaser.
