Former nun Christine Bennett can't wait to attend the christening of her friend Maddie's baby but feels a chill when she hears it's taking place in a town that no longer exists. Studsburg has an extraordinary history. Thirty years ago, it was evacuated by the government and flooded to create a reservoir. Maddie was the last child baptized there. But now drought has uncovered the town's forgotten church--along with a gruesome discovery. While local officials take advantage of the flood of publicity surrounding the case, Christine takes matters into her own hands--trying to piece together what turns out to be a sordid puzzle from the past.
