Despite having trained as a nurse to satisfy her parents, Susan Taylor had always been single-minded about dancing. Offered the chance to be a featured chorus dancer in the show Penny Parade transferring to New York, she knew it was now or never.
All the more galling then, that after six months she had to consult orthopedic surgeon Dr. Joel Blake about her knees. His advice was stark - stop dancing. But he did at least try to ease the transition by offering her a job, once he knew she was a trained nurse, though his sometimes brusque manner didn't suggest he had any real sympathy for her plight…
