Catherine Neville had become a reluctant celebrity. Under a nom de plume, she had published a book of poetry that had so pleased the ton that they vied for her attention. A second volume had just been published and everyone eagerly awaited the critics' response.

Sir Rowan Heath, respected and feared political essayist, found himself in the unique position of reviewing a book of poetry. Having little use for women and their little hobbies, Sir Rowan was obliged to issue a scathing critique.

As events evolved, Catherine had reason to be very grateful to Sir Rowan who seemed to appreciate her gentle nature and reluctant celebrity. They were much in each other's company and clearly smitten, when the awful truth came to light and threatened to destroy their future happiness!
