Elizabeth Parker comes to Brazil to take up a job as a schoolteacher in the declining city of Manalos, skirting the Amazonian jungle. Hoping to start a new life, she instead finds forbidden love with the husband of her employer, the aristocratic Kitty Drayton, who lives in a decaying mansion with her spinster sister.
