Barbara Collins is a prosecuting attorney for the city of St Paul, Minnesota. At 33, she's been devoted to her work and has never had a serious relationsjip with a man.

Then Elliot Randolph, a dashing state senator, sweeps into her life. Following a whirlwind courtship, they marry in the midst of his campaign for reelection.

Elliot is often too busy to spend time with Barbara, and she is distressed by her growing romantic feelings for his campaign manager, Jack Reese. She pushes them aside -- until the awful night when she and Jack discover Elliot's secret.
