When Kit was fourteen, starry-eyed as only a schoolgirl can be, Nicholas Redfern had told her, "If you wait for me, I'll marry you".

He had gone off to Africa, and that was that. True, he had now turned up in her life again, but everything was very different for both of them. Kit was on the brink of becoming engaged to Jeremy Jones, who loved and needed her, while Nicholas had arrived in town with a very glamorous girl-friend in tow -- the dazzling Stephanie.
