The Belgian Affair I: Boudica, is the fifth book of the Gaius Marius Chronicle, the memoire of a retired Roman soldier - Gaius Marius Insubrecus - a legionary who fought with Caesar throughout the Gallic wars and the Roman civil war, and supported Caesar's heir, Octavius, against Caesar's assassins and finally against Antonius and the Egyptian Queen, Cleopatra.In this first book of the Belgian Affair, Insubrecus is reunited with his comrade, Agrippa, and sent by Caesar to reconnoiter a route for the Roman army to march against, Galba, the self-styled High King of the Belgians. When he arrives at the Belgian town of Bibrax, he is confronted by an embassy from the mysterious isle of Britain. A tribe calling themselves the Eceni led by their warrior princess, The Boudica, seek an alliance with Caesar and the Romans.
