Johnny Angel enters the parking lot of the Apple Orchard Inn, an exclusive cocktail lounge in the wealthiest section of Sayberry, disheveled in dress and with a grim purposefulness in his eyes. He is here to meet his brother, Aaron, and his wife, Gloria, who are having an affair. The gun in his pocket has two bullets in the clip. Having secreted himself at the end of the bar and drunk himself to the proper point, he approaches the surprised lovers. A shot is fired and after the mass hysteria is quelled, he allows the patrons to leave, with the exception of Gloria, Aaron, and the strangely compelling cocktail waitress, Judy, who refuses to go. Nothing he says, no threats he makes will bend her will and he finally agrees that she can stay, moved by a great sense of comfort and a sense of relief by virtue of her presence. Through the ensuing arguments, pleas, and flashbacks, the history of Johnny's life is revealed. A second shot rings out. The police, who have been held at bay outside the lounge are now allowed entry. ened.
