David struggles for survival in the Pennsylyvania coal towns and loses most of his family as they strike out for the west. David settles in California and marries TILDA PEDERSON. They face life together, raise a family, and along the way encounter some of America's icons, including George Armstrong Custer, John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt.
