Lacey Cavendish enjoyed her job as English teacher at an exclusive girls' finishing school in Switzerland -- but she certainly had no intention of following the example of her young charges and falling in love with the school doctor, Roger Soames. She didn't even like Doctor Soames very much -- he was rude and dictatorial, and the pupils were welcome to him -- so Lacey turned her feelings in another direction, that of Doctor Ludwig Heist. But this was equally hopeless, she soon realised. Doctor Heist may or may not have been interested either in a charming pupil, or in the more sophisticated Gerda Reisenfeld, but he certainly wasn't going to notice Lacey!
