Lila and Rose are going to spend the year with their grandmother, and they are not pleased. Their grandmother dresses like a hippie. She doesn't own a TV. And she runs a doll hospital. But then their grandmother begins to tell them the story of a doll named Tatiana. . . .

Long ago Tatiana belonged to Anya, a Russian girl. They lived in a big house, and they were both very happy. But Anya's town became dangerous. Her father decided she would be safer if she went far away. Anya and Tatiana prepared to set sail on a big ship all the way to the United States. They were supposed to be in first class with family friends, but they ended up in third class by themselves. What would happen once the ship landed at Ellis Island? Would Anya and Tatiana be all alone in America?
