Arnold Peabody visits Madame Lily, a local medium, after his mother dies to see if he could obtain contact with her from beyond the grave. Before long, Arnold drowns himself. Soon after, Mildred Hewitt from Avenbridge falls to her death at a local beauty spot on a snowy night. Her son Gilbert decides to visit the medium too and he goes off the rails while the community watches in fascination.
