Sycamore Settlement

Wilhelm Morgen, a destitute German immigrant, speaks awkward English and devotes every ounce of strength to his lad and his small, motherless son, Morty. The first time Ruby sees his orderly well-built house, she is saddened by the lack of a woman's touch. Wilhelm falls in love with her but after his house burns down, he doesn't think he has anything to offer her. Not even promises. "My dreams lie buried in the ashes."
