The advertisement for a job as cook/travelling companion in the Australian outback was just what Saffi Quest wanted as a means of escaping from a hopeless love affair, and she was very relieved when Math Reyburn gave her the job. But things didn't go nearly as well as she had hoped. She couldn't understand Math's attitude - he seemed to be continually warning her to keep her distance, although he knew about her love affair with Rick Gibson, and he was curiously secretive about himself. Then, too late, Saffi realised that, with her, it was off with the old love and on with the new - except that the new love wasn't interested!
