Thomas Cady in "Texas Maverick" returns to his home range in southern Texas following three years of fighting for the Confederacy to find his father dead and the entire area under occupation by the Union Army. In "Sundown," Lew Atkins is one of the local cattle ranchers who has lost stock through rustling. Although there is no proof, it is evident to all of the ranchers that the culprit is Abe Healy.
Lewis B. Patten wrote more than ninety Western novels in thirty years, and three of them won Spur Awards from the Western Writers of America. He also received the Golden Saddleman Award. The most remarkable aspect of Patten's work is not that there is so much of it, but that so much of it is so fine.
