It all begins with a blurry, black-and-white aerial photograph. To the trained eyes of Dr. Benjamin Kazin, it is the archaeological discovery of a lifetime: evidence of an unknown ancient African civilization and their legendary City of the Moon, a city that supposedly vanishes with the light of day.

Dr. Kazin, along with his lovely assistant, Sally, and wealthy businessman Lauren Sturvesant, launch an unprecedented exploration into the heart of the red cliffs of Botswanaland to unlock the secrets of the lost culture and its enigmatic Ghost King--a culture challenged by savage surroundings, convulsed by volcanic passions, and shattered by bloody war.
