When Flora is sent off to America to live with her uncle, she finds that he has a housekeeper who is something more to him than just hired help, and that behind the easy and luxurious life she has entered lay sorrow and racism. In America of the mid-19th century, Native American Indians are being driven from their homes onto arid reservations, and the one man whom Flora begins to love is half Irish and half Indian. He is determined not to be caught in the snare of an English girl, and soon Flora must make a decision between desire and duty.
