Ben looked skeptical and vaguely disapproving as he spoke. "Because Chris needs a father?"

"I'm not -- I didn't mean -- That's not the only consideration, you know." Jenny stopped, knowing she sounded defensive.

"No, I forgot. There are those two parallel careers. Two briefcases on the hall table, those lively discussions about torts and contracts over the breakfast table."

She gave a little gasp of anger, but before she could answer him, he stood up and asked the question she'd been dreading the most. "But what about love?"
