Diane decided to tell Martin the truth. "I'm engaged to Leo Marchand," she said. "His parents own Wildacres." She didn't dare add that they were all armed on the neighboring estate, because of the rumor of a thief at large.

Was Martin that thief, and did he plan to rob Wildacres next? She knew almost nothing about this mysterious man. But when his arms tightened around her and his mouth came down on hers, she didn't care who he was or what he had done.
