Stefan in Love

Stefan Nagy, the central figure in this shattering study of romantic obsession, is a successful journalist in pre-glasnost Hungary. In the throes of a severe midlife crisis, he spies a beautiful young woman at a Budapest cafe one day and immediately falls in love. By chance meeting Ileana, he confesses his infatuation. Though twice her age, he impresses her with his intellect and accomplishments, and they soon become lovers. Stefan ultimately forsakes his family and career, and they emigrate to America. Once in New York, however, attraction turns to estrangement. Stefan is reduced to writing for an obscure foreign newspaper, while Ileana finds quick success as a model.
