Susannah and Bethlehem are runaways. Susannah is an orphan sent to live on a southern plantation with her uncle and aunt. She wants to go home. Bethlehem is a slave. She wants to be free. They decide that there is a better life waiting for them in the North. A life without horrible rules and beatings. A place where they can be best friends, no matter what.

But their journey is not going to be easy. They've got to travel from Virginia to Vermont—on foot. The only thing that keeps them going is the promise of a new life.
