It was a long way from Silicon Valley to backwoods Tennessee, but Laurette Hailey was ready to escape the fast-paced California computer world to come home to the Smoky Mountains and let memories of a disastrous marriage fade into the summer air.

Jeff Murray had come back too. He'd returned from Memphis to find that running the Locust Grove Police Department provided plenty of challenge.
