In Dodge City, arguments get settled once and for all. Like the quick, mean way the drifter with the Confederate hat and the fast draw persuades his opponent. The man's lean prowess in a fight is enough to impress Mike Dunstan, boss of the big No Man's Land spread. Dunstan had a job for the stranger, who calls himself Billy Starr.

The hired gun with the haunted past has a rough chore—keeping squatters off the ranch by whatever deadly means he chooses. Then Billy learns he's sold his soul to do the devil's bidding. But Dunstan has ugly plans to keep him on the payroll—or put him six feet under.
