Someone had a talent for murder...
At loose ends after the death of her poet father, young Elizabeth Wainwright left her native Boston and drove across the continent to join a small, hand-picked group of young people in an isolated, West Coast commune. They were artists all -- writers, painters, sculptors -- living under the roof of Miranda Field, a strange woman with a fragile soul in a gross body. All of the residents welcomed Elizabeth warmly -- especially Barnaby, attractive and enigmatic, with a dark side to his talent, who painted his subjects with the violence and evil he saw behind their smiles and in their eyes. It was Barnaby to whom Elizabeth turned when the first of several tragic accidents occurred...or were they accidents?

Could she really trust this man who was now constantly in her thoughts? Could she confide in him, go to him for help in saving her own life, when he might well be the madman running loose in the once-tranquil artists colony? Time would tell -- but by then it might be too late!
