Carole Gilliland is a woman fighting for her place in a man’s world in a time women are seldom seen and never heard. Changes are coming, and Carole plans to have a say in them. As double agent for the president of her new country of America, she passes information both ways with little of consequence going to President Washington. Matt Daniels is a county sheriff charged with protecting hated collectors of the excise tax on whisky-making from which frontiersmen of Western Pennsylvania earn their living. When he joins forces with Carole, not only tax collectors but those responsible for passing the unfair tax had better watch their backs. Carole and her fellow frontiersmen battle the elements, Indians and politicians. They don’t win all the battles, but the enemy knows he’s been in a fight.
