About This Book

Although sororities promote sisterhood, leadership, and philanthropy, a darker side of Greek life has emerged in recent years, one that is marked by institutionalized corruption, elitism, and abuse of power. At the core of it is a culture in some chapters that prioritizes money, image, and loyalty over ethics and responsibility. Hazing, bias, financial exploitation, and cover-ups of misconduct have been perpetrated on campuses across the country. They have complained of being bullied into silence, being physically and psychologically harmed during initiation ceremonies, or being forced to conform to dangerous social norms.Leadership structures in these groups can become closed and inward-looking, permitting a closed clique of members to dominate membership decisions, budgets, and disciplinary action. Money also enters the picture, with some chapters misusing chapter dues or failing to explain how money is spent. Racial and socioeconomic discrimination are also frequent complaints, with allegations that individual chapters discriminate on the basis of appearance or background in selectively recruiting members, perpetuating exclusionary traditions. The argument about sorority corruption is growing louder, fueled by whistleblowers, student activism, and social media. Universities are increasingly being called upon to investigate and police Greek life with stricter policies. Under increasing scrutiny, the future of sororities rests on how much they are willing to reform from outdated traditions to a more inclusive and responsible type of sisterhood.
