About This Book

This book is fiction, although it has a focal point in the murders of three Civil Rights workers in June of 1964, in Neshoba County, MS. This incident is the only truth in the book. However, I have observed over the years that many southern men crossed the color bar and fathered mixed blood children. It was not considered so bad when the man was white, after all this was a common thing during slave days. If a white woman gave birth to a black child, she was ostracized and was outside the pale, often being disowned by her family. Some southern families have long been certain that black people are a bit less than human. This is the shame of the new South. In recent years, the law against mixed marriages has been overturned and some couples have taken advantage of this. But in the deep south, there is still a bit of prejudice against this.
From my five years of substitute teaching, I have come to see that color has nothing to do with character.
