For Larry St. Germain, an ambitious sheriff's lieutenant in a sleepy Vermont county, there isn't all that much to do. Mostly he marks time waiting to take over as commanding officer and dreams of future glory.

But when the teenage daughter of the state's attorney is brutally raped and murdered by a scripture-spouting psychopath barely older than his victim, the county's peace and St. Germain's plans are shattered.
