When Doctor Stephen Heralds asked Vicky to take charge of his new nursing home at Hilltops, he had no idea of the mixed emotions this would stir up in the young nurse.

For Vicky had grown up in a household rent with quarrels. Her earliest memories were of loud and angry voices, her mother in tears, her father slamming the door. No wonder that when love came into her life it found her apprehensive and afraid to embark on the great adventure of marriage.

Three choices seemed to open up for Vicky. She could marry Johnnie, the loving dependable friend of her childhood, or the doctor who offered an unemotional comradeship and a worthwhile task; or she could remain single, dedicated wholly to her chosen profession of nursing.
