Excerpt:

I have my own theory about people who don't believe certain things exist and claim those of us who have seen ghosts, shadow people and things like that are fools or crazy. I believe that if you think the world is black and white and it's just what it appears to you, then you are probably the fool for you have no faith. As the writer Elizabeth Gilbert once said, "Faith is belief in what you cannot see or prove or touch."……….

I reached down to my ammo belt and pulled out four 30-06 rounds and loaded them into the magazine for the Remington, then snapped the magazine into the rifle. I pulled back the bolt and then forward loading one round into the breach. The sound echoed through the trees. I ejected the magazine and replaced the one round, which was now in the breach and then snapped the magazine back into the rifle. I would now have five rounds to take the bastard down with, if everything else failed, or else he would take me down.

As I snapped the magazine back into the rifle, I thought about Brenda. I hadn't known Brenda for long, about six months, but we had bonded. I had met her at a friend's house–one of those set up blind date things by a well meaning friend that usually turns into disaster but it worked this time. She worked at a museum but there was nothing museum-like about her. We had spent most of our free time together since we had met. In fact it got to the point that I couldn't think of spending any of my free time without her.

Then one day I got the bright idea to ask her to go with me on a trip to the mountains for some quiet time. It turned out to be a bad idea–a real bad idea.....
