Emigrating to the United States from England in 1840, Sarah Brown is full of optimism. The illiterate servant girl is sure she will find a better life than the one she had known as a near slave in Mrs. Gerty's household.

But that is before her new employers are killed, and before plantation owner Jonathan Bowman takes a too personal interest in her.

Confronted by the cruelties of slavery, Sarah feels trapped in an unjust system. The only person she trusts for advice is thousands of miles away. If only she could read the book he gave her and find the answer to the emptiness in her soul!
