The memoir of a boy by the name of, Frank Henry Barker, he experiences life in a dysfunctional family and has to fend for himself at the age of twelve. Frank shines shoes at one of the roughest taverns in town. He soon develops a rough and radical attitude from all the abuse he takes at home, in the tavern, and at school. The book takes a look at the psychological effects of abuse and bullying. Most murderers are abused as children. This book can give some insight into how those psychological effects can change a person over time. A compelling story, full of unsavory characters who navigate Frank into a life of crime and disappointment, until he finally realizes he can take control of his emotions and find success through self-education and insight. An inspirational story to say the least.
