The invitation to Chateau Langlais delighted Eve Lewis. She was an aficionado of black magic, and the scholarly count who had approached her during a Parisian revel promised a treasure from the past - stimulating occult experiences that she would never forget. And there was the promise of one more treasure: the chance to meet Count Henri's nephew, Leonard, wan from a tragic blood ailment to the point where he could not leave the remote chateau. But Leonard was a young man of unfathomable charm and grace - a young man, the count felt, who needed Eve.
