This set of three novellas follows the increasingly bizarre relationship of Grant, an all-American guy, proud of his physique and his strength, with April, seemingly a delicate, submissive young woman.
A chance meeting on vacation leads to marriage, but Grant soon realizes that April is not what she seemed, as she becomes increasingly ruthless in taking control both in the things they do, and in their sexual relationship.
And then he has her family to contend with. A domineering mother, a sister who desires him for herself, and a brother, who seems strangely protective of April.
Grant and April are both unfaithful, but when April becomes more blatant, and proud to talk of having affairs, it triggers Grant to do the same, not least with her sister.
What he doesn't realize is that the sisters have their own plans for Grant, and for each other.
Their brother Ben's obsessive behavior leads to violent confrontation, and there's a growing mystery about the death of one of April's ex-colleagues …
Against this background, Grant becomes confused about his own sexuality, not realizing that the two sisters are manipulating him …
Then he shows an interest in the family background, that starts off a chain of events, leading to questions about the past, and which could ultimately put his life in peril …
