About This Book

Susanna Rowson (1762–1824) was a British-American novelist, poet, playwright, religious writer, stage actress and educator.

"Sarah, or The Exemplary Wife" was first published in 1813. This was the last Susanna Rowson novel published during her lifetime. Written as a series of letters, it tells how Sarah remains dutiful to her husband even though he was cruel and unfaithful. It is based on her own life, and is summed up by the message on the original title page: "Do not marry a fool".

The cover picture is a portrait of Susanna Rowson in her later years.
