Two short stories about the main characters in The Lucky Lady, a historical romance, by Janet Quinn.

On her fourteenth birthday, Lila Kane decides she must leave home before her drunken father kills her. She travels across the prairie looking for a town where her pa won't find her and she can find a job. Tired and dusty she finally stops at a town. Will she be able to find a job before she starves to death?

Carter Hawkins has just graduated from Harvard and is looking forward to a six month tour of the Continent. His father and grandfather want him to become a banker, which is the furthest thing from his desires, but he figures he has six months before he has to tell them. Then, as he is packing, his grandfather informs him his father has died suddenly and Carter must take over his place at the bank. With his trip cancelled and his friend betraying him by not postponing his trip, Carter decides to make his own way in the world away from his family. Can he find the happiness he craves?
