It didn't take long before Rick saw firsthand the atrocities of war. Young men walking beside him were instantly killed. Others were left maimed with missing limbs. Bravely fighting in the jungles alongside his comrades, Rick became seriously wounded in battle. When Hang Le, a young Vietnamese woman from a nearby village, found him lying on the riverbank near death, she risked her life and that of her younger brother to hide Rick from the Viet Cong and nursed him back to health.
When Rick returned home, he quickly saw drastic changes everywhere: in his family, with childhood friends, in the opinions of his fellow Americans, and within himself. He was thankful for his two best friends that fought with him Vietnam, who were more like brothers than friends to him.
