Zeke Wolpert is sheriff of Keith County, Nebraska. He doesn't keep the peace so much as turn a blind eye to the illegal activities of outlaws who pay him for the privilege. To the disgust of the county's honest citizens—and of Zeke himself—he spends most of his earnings on liquor and most of his days hungover.

Now the outlaws have set their sights on a Wells Fargo shipment that's worth a fortune. It's a chance for Zeke to get enough money to retire from this unsavory business once and for all. But it's also an opportunity for him to honor the badge he wears by serving the right side of the law....
