New Mexico engineer Tory Travers is summoned home to Gainesville, Florida, where her estranged father, a powerful senator, lies in a coma after a hit-and-run accident. While preparing to face the demons of her past, Tory finds herself unwittingly embroiled in a complex, emotionally charged and deadly conspiracy connected to a 1923 racial massacre -- the torching of a town called Rosewood.

The mystery intensifies the moment Tory and Detective David Alvarez leave the airport and witness a fellow passenger -- a graduate student funded by Rosewood-related legislation -- killed by a speeding car. Another victim, also connected to her father, is murdered and Tory becomes a suspect. That is, until a killer determined to silence Rosewood's secrets forever decides Tory would be better off among the ashes of the dead, as well.
