To John Putnam Thatcher Sloan Guaranty Trust's intrepid VP, the merger looks from the outset to be a golden opportunity. ASI, a large water-fixture company is prepared to enter the lucrative retail market, and them partner of choice is Ecker, a small, family-owned and family-run kitchen appliance company But the deal soon springs a nasty leak when people in both companies sense personal and commercial disaster ahead.

In the midst of negotiations, an ambitious ASI manager known for his scandal mongering, is literally skewered to death at a trade show. And a suspicious fire wipes out Esker's shipping records. Banking whiz-cum-amateur sleuth Thatcher is suddenly caught in an ever-widening web of corporate chaos and mystery.
